Fidelinka pekara

Mother fired up the bread oven early in the morning and prepared the poker, wooden paddle for removing the bread from the oven and knife for scoring the bread. She put on a white apron and carefully put up her hair in a scarf.


She spread the flour out on a special low table. Instead of yeast she used a mixture of flour, bran and corn flour and sour dough she had kept from the previous batch.


The first time the dough fermented on the special low table then she kneaded it again with her hands and shaped it into round buns.
She placed them on a special dish, a dough tray, and then covered the dough with linen. Then she placed the round buns on the wooden paddle, scored them on the sides with a wooden knife and one by one placed them in the heated oven from which the intoxicating smell of fresh bread soon began to emanate.


Baking bread was once a sacred ritual. The bread oven adorned every home and was the pride of the women of the house. Bread was more than just food. It represented a symbol of security, prosperity, survival, …
